Updated: 3 days ago

Building backdrop with text: Bold Futures: Continuing the Conversation. Discussing national policies' impact and actions in communities with BCBCC (Beaufort County Black Chamber of Commerce).

Our February 20th BOLD Futures discussion focused on community empowerment, resilience, and collective action to address pressing local challenges. The conversation brought together leaders, advocates, and community members to share insights on the role of spirituality, leadership, economic justice, and youth development in shaping a stronger future for Beaufort County.

-- Key Takeaways from the Discussion:

Faith & Resilience in Challenging Times – Pastor Moore

  • "Everything is spiritual!" – A reminder that faith and spirituality are central to community strength.

  • "This is a great time to come together…" – A call for unity, emphasizing that self-reliance and mutual support are key to progress.

  • "We can move mountains because GOD is on our side!" – Encouraging perseverance in the face of adversity.

Leadership & The Fight for Equity – Councilman Mitch Mitchell

  • Acknowledged that many of the challenges faced today are unimaginable, yet history has shown that communities can overcome.

  • Reflected on Dr. King’s vision, questioning how he would view today’s progress.

  • Expressed concern that progress should be reinvested back into the community rather than benefiting outside interests.

  • "Hold fast, this will pass." – A message of hope, assuring that through unity and perseverance, the community will emerge stronger.

Economic Justice & Representation – Andre Holmes, Beaufort Jasper EOC

  • Raised concerns about how quickly external forces can threaten the stability of local organizations, impacting staff, students, and families.

  • "We have been fighting the war on poverty since 1966, and it’s a shame that we are still fighting." – A call for more effective, sustainable solutions.

  • Stressed that representation matters—community members must actively claim a seat at decision-making tables.

  • "We can’t be last anymore." – Urged the community to continue fighting for Beaufort, Jasper, and South Carolina, ensuring self-advocacy and local control over resources.

  • "We can win this fight." – A powerful affirmation that change is possible when communities mobilize together.

Investing in the Future – Carrie Major, Beaufort County Youth Conference

  • "What impacts families, impacts our youth." – Highlighted the interconnectedness of family stability and youth success.

  • Emphasized the need to educate, inspire, and empower young people, ensuring they make healthy, informed decisions.

  • "We work with all children, no matter where they live." – Reinforced the commitment to equity in youth services.

  • Called for collaboration and networking to ensure long-term investment in young people’s futures.

  • "When we instill in these young people, that information will be taken throughout their lives to make them better adults." – Reinforced the idea that mentorship and community support have a lasting impact.

Moving Forward: A Call to Action

The BOLD Futures discussion made it clear that real change starts with the community itself. Through faith, leadership, economic empowerment, and youth investment, Beaufort County can build a more sustainable, resilient future. The conversation highlighted the power of unity, advocacy, and strategic action—and served as a call for continued engagement, leadership, and collaboration in shaping the future of the region.
